Its been 10 years on since Chris Moneymaker turned a $39 satellite entry into $2.5 million, and today live tournament poker is creating millionaires nearly every other week.

Today, the world of poker is a little different than the one Chris Moneymaker helped produce. When the United States government attacked online poker on Black Friday, it altered everything. Online playing numbers are still down, as are live competitions that once welcomed thousands of online qualifiers into its ample bosom. But in spite of the numbers not being exactly what they when were, live poker is still producing huge bags.

David ‘Doc’ Sands has just ended up being the 5th player in less than 8 weeks to secure a seven-figure rating playing live competition poker. Sands paid $100,000 to take a seat in the World Poker Tour Super High Roller occasion, in the season ending at The Bellagio in Las Vegas, where he beat Joseph Cheong in heads-up action to win $1,023,750 – his second 7 figure rating of 2013 after getting $1,259,320 for completing second in the $98,000 Super High Roller in the Bahamas back in January.

Joe Cheong got $614,250 for his runner-up spot, but he is one of the five who has actually been privileged enough to get a million after succeeding the Macau Millions in April for $1,343,370. Cheong currently has $2.5 million in live competition revenues this year alone.

The European Poker Tour Grand Final also saw three individuals sign up with the millionaire club. First, Steve O’Dwyer succeeded the Main Event for $1,604,972 and then Max Altergott and Jason Mercier struck the one-two in the EUR100,000 Super High Roller. Altergott chose up $2,289,970 for first and Mercier snagged $1,462,964 for second.

Millionaires are ending up being more frequent at the poker tables – even more than an incentive to play … and hopefully succeed!
